HIST 310 - Europe at the Turn of the Century, 1880-1917 Credits: 4 A consideration of the cultural, social, and political questions associated with the rise of modern life and the weakening of traditional forms of thought and association. Topics considered include the concepts of individualism and society, the ideology of progress, the cultural dimensions of science and technology, the place of the city and urban culture in European civilization, the politics of class, race, and gender, the importance of Empire for European self-identity, and the significance of World War I and the Russian Revolution as expressions of the conflict between tradition and modernity.
Prerequisite: HIST 109 or HIST 110 , or permission of the instructor.
