ENGL 350 - Children’s Literature Credits: 4 A study of children’s literature, with focus on its cultural and theoretical underpinnings. Among the concerns addressed may be the definitions of “childhood” and “adolescence” the genre helps construct or undermine; the impact children’s literature can have on notions of gendered, ethnic, class, and national identity; the formal variations of archetypal tales; the genre’s role in authors’ careers. Specific topics may include fairy tales (their cultural history and contemporary transformations); multicultural children’s literature; the contemporary young adult novel; and children’s verse.
Prerequisite: ENGL 110 or permission of the instructor.
Distribution Requirements: HE, PD.
ENGL 200 may be used in place of ENGL 110 in satisfying the prerequisite for the above course.
