POLSC 265 - Globalization and Development Credits: 4 An introduction to the historical, ethical, and political dimensions of the globalizing world economy, with a particular focus on various ways to define and measure the concept of “development.” We will begin by examining the history of globalization in relation to western imperialism and postwar theories of modernization and democracy, and will then study cases of economic and political development in locations including East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Issues to be addressed include relationships between market-led globalization and inequality, questions of gender and race, and environmental crises, as well as the recent populist turn against globalization in many locations.
