ART 220 - Histories of Modern Art Credits: 4 A study of modern art since 1839. This course begins with the patenting of photography in 1839, which irrevocably changed art history and visual culture. Continuing through late Modernism in the 1960s, the course surveys Art History during a period largely defined by artists’ desires to break with established precedents to find modes of expression. Through the study of art practices primarily in Europe and the United States, students learn about how art participated in major social, political, and cultural shifts throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Course material includes histories of painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, design, and performance art.
