MUSIC 221 - Western Art Music: Antiquity to Classical Period

An extensive survey of Western music from the ancient Greeks through the Classical era. The course explores the historical sequence and the cultural contexts in which the various styles developed. Students undertake intensive audible and visual score study as well as readings from a variety of sources. Special emphasis is placed on the transitions between eras.
