COMM 342 - Digital Media and Technology


Credits: 4
An examination of the impacts of digital and social media on online and material cultures. Students explore the role of media technologies in everyday life, focusing particularly on how they shape identities, cultures, and practices. Topics include but are not limited to: the power of media technology industries, built-in biases and privacy issues in artificial intelligence and big data, the normalizing of surveillance, technological innovation and creative activism, and technology as a tool for liberation and oppression. 

Prerequisite: One 100-level or 200-level COMM course; or permission of the instructor.
