MUSIC 224 - History of Jazz Credits: 4 A journey through the adaptive vitality of jazz music from its beginnings into the twenty-first century. Through readings and active listening, students examine the origins of jazz music, the development of diverse local and regional styles in its early years, and its transformations through a series of major movements such as swing, bebop, free, and smooth. Students explore aesthetic approaches and the contributions of musicians within the shifting American cultural landscape.
