ART 171 - Photography I Credits: 4 An introduction to photography as a potent form of artistic visual communication. Contemporary and historical trends, techniques, and thematic content are covered, with an emphasis on proficiency with craft. Hands-on assignments, readings, lectures, and discussions provide a broad survey of image analysis strategies, help students learn technical basics, make informed choices about materials and processes, and articulate their own creative ideas. The course requires a 35 mm film camera with manually adjustable apertures and shutter speeds. Coursework integrates effective oral and written communication to explore contemporary and historical practices within the medium and the role of art in human experience.
