ENVSC 370 - Insect Ecology and the Environment(also listed as BIO 370 ) Credits: 4 A study of insects, including those that interfere with efforts to tame natural systems such as agriculture, horticulture, and forestry. We introduce insect biology, methodologies to control pest insects, and how these vary based upon the environment and human requirement. Lectures discuss conventional methods of pest control but delve more deeply into biological and cultural control methods, establishing an understanding of integrated pest management programs. Labs introduce pest and beneficial insects found in ecosystems throughout Pennsylvania. A strong foundation in insect ecology and population dynamics allows students to manage ecosystems to decrease pest numbers without increasing chemical input.
Prerequisite: BIO 219 OR BIO 220 or ENVSC 210 .
Distribution Requirements: QR, SP.
