HIST 358 - Migrants & Refugees in the 20th Century Credits: 4 An examination of the role of planned and unplanned migrations in the social and cultural transformations of the twentieth-century. Students investigate the economic, political, social, and cultural sources and byproducts of migration and flight from the late nineteenth-century through today. Students probe such themes as: theories of migration; contrasting pre- and post-1945 migrations; development of the United Nations displaced persons and refugee policies; refugees during the Cold War; and refugees in the contemporary world. Students will consider various conceptions of globalization as well as the prospects of and impediments to the growth of multi-ethnic societies.
Prerequisite: One history course.
