HIST 124 - A History of the Modern Middle East, 1839-present Credits: 4 An introduction to the history of the lands that comprise the former Ottoman Empire. Students investigate topics such as: the reform and independence movements of the late Ottoman Empire; the modernization and development programs within nation-states; the implications of the settlements following the First World War; the Arab-Israeli Conflict; post-WWII autocracies; US involvement in the Middle East; and recent challenges in the region. Also explored are the competing and overlapping concepts of religious and secular-structured notions of nation, identity, and coexistence.
