POLSC 482 - Race and the American Political Mind Credits: 4 An exploration of the psychological, cultural and ethical implications of racism in a political order dedicated to the principle of human equality. Notable among such implications is what Ellison described as the ethical schizophrenia of the American mind. Readings will be drawn from the works of political theorists, social critics, and novelists such as James Baldwin, W.J. Cash, W.E.B. DuBois, Ralph Ellison, William Faulkner, Harriet Jacobs, Toni Morrison, Shelby Steele, Richard Wright and Cornel West.
