MEDRN 180 - 1189: Conflict and Creativity in the Time of the Third Crusade Credits: 4 An interdisciplinary, team-taught examination of a “slice of life” in the year 1189. This introductory class focuses on the events surrounding the Third Crusade by examining documentary texts (literature, artwork, medicine, law) in their historical, religious, and social context, including the ways that Arabic and European cultures were both at odds and in concert in such areas as medicine, art, and literature. Students develop critical and analytical skills through reading, writing about, and discussing significant texts and artworks that emerged from Arabic and European cultures and their contact.
