ECON 426 - Monetary Economics Credits: 4 An exploration of the role money and monetary policy play in the domestic and external (trade) sectors of the economy. Starting with the basics of financial institutions, we discuss the policy tools by which authorities monitor the supply of liquidity. We analyze and compare the impacts of various policy measures in different phases of business cycles. Eventually we focus on the connection between domestic monetary policy and the balance of payments, extending the discussion to the essentials of currency markets. Central Bank intervention in currency markets, the role of expectations, speculation, and underlying trade flows affecting currency values are presented in a systemic context.
