GHS 370 - Medical Anthropology Credits: 4 An introduction to methods used by anthropologists to understand and study health, illness, health care, and health-seeking behavior. The premier method of empirical research in the field of cultural anthropology, “ethnography,” involves participant observation, conversation, and interviewing. In addition to participant observation, medical anthropologists make use of a variety of other research methods to study issues directly relevant to health, illness, and the provision of health care. To create their own “mini ethnography,” students complete the appropriate ethical training, conduct participant observation, collect field notes, learn to code and analyze qualitative data, and partner with a community institution during lab. One laboratory per week.
Prerequisite: GHS 130 or permission of the instructor.
Distribution Requirements: IP, SB.
