Lockout Policy

Effective Date

August 1, 2023

Office of Primary Responsibility

Office of Public Safety

Summary of Policy

This policy provides details regarding the misuse and/or misplacement of keys resulting in lockouts from residential spaces.

Reason for Policy

Students are responsible for locking their rooms and maintaining the security of their keys and identification cards at all times.

Policy Statement

In-Person Unlocks:

Students requesting an in-person unlock will be asked personal, identifying information to ensure the correct person is being granted access to the room. A Public Safety Officer will respond to the room as quickly as time permits to unlock the door.  (Other calls for service may supersede room unlocks.)

Remote Access Unlocks:

Some doors may be equipped with card access and can be opened remotely.  Students requesting a remote access unlock will be asked personal identifying information to ensure the correct person is being granted access to the room.  After the dispatcher has confirmed the appropriate person is requesting a remote access unlock, the dispatcher will unlock the door remotely.

Unlock Charges:

Students will be granted three free room unlocks per academic year.  After the third unlock, students will be billed $25 for each subsequent unlock. (For the purpose of calculating unlocks, remote access unlocks and in-person unlocks are both considered unlocks.)

Appeal of Unlock Fees:

Students may complete and submit an appeal form at Public Safety to appeal a lockout fee. The Appeal Committee will meet on the Study Day of the semester in which the lockout fee(s) were charged. Students may attend the appeal meeting in person to address the committee. Students are not required to attend the appeal meeting.  If students do not attend the appeal meeting, the written appeal will be read aloud to the committee.

All fees will be applied to the student’s college account.  If the appeal is approved by the Appeal Committee, the fee will be removed from the account.
