Hazing Policy

Effective Date

August 1, 2023

Office of Primary Responsibility

Office of Student Life

Summary of Policy

Hazing, which Allegheny College defines as any activity, planned or unplanned, that is implicitly or explicitly expected of someone to obtain, or continue membership to a group, organization, or team,  that 1) requires participation in an activity that does not appear to be group-relevant preparations AND endangers the physical or mental health of an individual, 2) involves the consumption of alcohol or drugs, 3) humiliates, intimidates, or demeans an individual; regardless of a person’s willingness to participate, is strictly prohibited.

Reason for Policy

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all college individuals are treated with dignity and without fear of harm when joining, or in continuing membership, with groups, organizations and/or teams.

Policy Statement

Students are subject to the Hazing Policy of this institution, as well as state and federal hazing laws; and are responsible for knowing and abiding by said policies and laws.

Members of the Allegheny College community are prohibited in engaging in the act of hazing, as defined above (and by Pennsylvania state law). Hazing includes, but is not limited to: alcohol or other illegal substances at recruitment or initiation events; underage drinking at any organized event; activities that are meant to humiliate or demoralize member, or potential new members; coerced sexual activities; or activities not related to the group/organization/team purpose that could endanger the health and safety of others. Hazing does not need to be intentional, and hazing can occur, even if participants are willing.

All alleged violations of this hazing policy will be referred to the Hazing Investigation Team, which consists of administrators from various departments across campus. The Hazing Investigation Team will determine whether it is more likely than not that an incident of hazing occurred, and if so, refer the allegation to the Student Conduct Process. The process will follow either the Organizational Conduct Process or the Non-Academic Conduct Process (or in some cases both). All allegations of hazing that proceed through the Conduct Process will be reported out via the Timothy Piazza Anti-Hazing Report in accordance with Pennsylvania state law.

Consistent with the Good Samaritan Policy, students who seek assistance for another student in need of help for drug or alcohol intoxication/poisoning or who seek help for a student who has been a victim of assault or other forms of violence, including hazing, will not be subjected to punitive sanctions.
