Black Studies (BLKST) is a 22-credit minor that requires the following and can best be constructed in consultation with the Black Studies Coordinator, Professor Barbara Shaw:

  • BLKST100, Introduction to Black Studies
  • At least one of the following CORE courses: BLKST 225, BLKST/HIST 255, BLKST/HIST 257, COMJ 350, ENGL 234, RELST 173, or RELST 373. These courses can also count as DISCIPLINARY.
  • At least one of the following DISCIPLINARY courses: ENGL 113, COMJ 310, HIST 361, HIST 571, HIST 572, ENVSC 352, PHIL 275. If these are not offered in a given semester, CORE courses may be substituted for this requirement. Please contact Professor Barbara Shaw for additional guidance.
  • Related courses may fill out the rest of the minor: such as COMJ 280, COMJ 460, HIST 261, HIST 269, HIST 324, HIST 345, HIST 347, HIST 563, PHIL 210, POLSC 303, POLSC 344, POLSC 482, PSYCH 450, PSYCH 491, RELST 146, RELST 180, WGSS 210, WGSS 255, WGSS 275, WGSS 300; WGSS 310, WGSS 410.
  • The Black Studies capstone experience is named in the catalog as BLKST 480 Capstone Seminar (2 credits). This course does not exist and has been replaced by an upper-level core or discipline course (related can be used if needed).
  • At least one course must be at the 300-level or higher. 
  • Black Studies is an interdivisional minor and so may be combined with any other program on campus as a major.
